Bon, je vois que le sujet suscite beaucoup de questions alors voilà une description du matos des mecs sauf qu'il n'y a pas de précisions sur la SG...
Justin's Gear...
Justin's main guitars are a pair of Gibson custom shop Justin Hawkins Signature series guitars, one in silverburst the other a rather fetching pinkburst. They are fitted with PAF pick ups, a Bigsby vibrato tailpiece and feature an elaborate fingerboard inlay of flames rendered in mother of pearl and abalone. A limited number of the signature models will be available in the UK through the Gibson importers Rosetti. Price is to be confirmed, but they won't be cheap – the inlay takes time and a craftsman. Just eight are being made, so start saving now!
These are backed up with a pair of Gibson Les Paul Customs. The Customs, one in black and one in white ("The Alipine Slut"), are stock factory models. As a second guitar Justin has a transparent 1969 Ampeg Dan Armstrong guitar ("The Perspex Avenger"), which he picked up for next to nothing. Justin prefers not to use this guitar live as it is very rare and a bit fragile. This guitar is used for all of Justin's solos in the studio as it generally cuts through the teamed Les Pauls. Dan Armstrong started rereleasing these guitars recently and they are proving quite popular – also pushing up the price of the originals by about £1000!
At a recent visit to the Gibson Custom Shop facility in Nashville, Justin found a unique hand carved Les Paul, this has the styling of a sea shell and is finished in a satin white pearl. This guitar and a gold top with P90 pickups have now joined his collection. A big thank you to Pat Foley and all at Gibson USA and Juliette Avery at the London office. Justin uses Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkies (9 on the top for those ultra fast solos and 42 on the low E to keep the bottom end up). Justin chooses Jim Dunlop custom-printed Tortex picks.
The amps are Mesa Engineering Triple Rectifier models, one set for rhythm, one for lead. These run into 4 Standard Rectifier cabinets, two for each channel. All the amps and cabs are covered in red tooled leather. The channels are switched with a Mike Hill A-B box. For his rhythm sound he uses the middle channel (rhythm) with the gain pretty low and the master channel right up (which pushes the mids extensively). Justin also has a Korg DTR1 rack tuner at the front of the chain which can mute signal to the amp for tuning.
The basics of the rack are a radio receiver – Justin uses a Shure wireless system to allow him to run around without being hindered by leads – and a Drawmer gate. All of the cabling has been replaced with Canare GS-6, not cheap but very reliable. Setup changes frequently and will continue to do so.

Dan's Gear...
three Gibson les Paul Standards fitted with PAF pickups, one in honeyburst ("Dune"), one in black ("Black Shuck") and one in cherry burst;
one Gibson Les Paul Standard fitted with a Seymour Duncan custom pickup at the bridge and a Seymour Duncan '59 at the neck in dark burst;
one Gibson Les Paul Standard fitted with a Seymour Duncan custom pickup at the bridge, a Burst Bucker 3 at the neck and a Fishman Powerbridge transducer, finished in white;
one Gretsch Elliot Easton Signature series fitted with a Seymour Duncan custom pickup at the bridge and a Seymour Duncan '59 at the neck, finished in black;
one Gibson SG, one Gretsch Malcolm Young Signature series and one Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty – these three are rarely, if ever, played live.
Dan uses Ernie Ball strings. After experimenting with different custom gauges Dan settled on a custom selection of 11, 15, 22p, 32, 44, 54 – an extremely heavy gauge that most would find very difficult to play with. Dan and Justin request a change of strings before each and every gig, and due to this have broken just two strings between them in the last 35 gigs. Dan also chooses Jim Dunlop 73mm nylon and custom-printed Tortex picks.
For amplification, Dan runs three Marshall SL100 and one Matamp Green 120 heads through three Marshall 1960 Vintage AX 4x12" and three Marshall 1960 Vintage BX 4x12" cabinets.
At the front of the stage you will find Dan's pedal board. This features one Mike Hill isolated line splitter and two Boss LS1 line selectors, one cutting the sound to the amp channel when not needed and one sending the whole signal to a Boss TU2 tuner. Next up is a Line6 Delay Modeller out of which two leads are sent (left and right) to the amps so that they run in stereo.
Before you get to the Line6 you will find a very rare vintage Ibanez Tube Screamer which is generally used for his solos, etc. This pedal was the first out of the stables when Ibanez first developed this model and cuts through just about anything! Dan also has an arsenal of vintage pedals/gadgets/effects, etc., etc., that come into play in the studio. All cable is Canare GS6, all jacks are either Switchcraft angles or Neutrik straights.
